A SPORTS club dedicated to disabled children and adults in north Powys has been given a generous cash boost from a Llanidloes family.

Daniel Crowther, 39, presented a cheque for £1,200 to N-Able Sports Club that was raised from a charity music night held in November 2018, in memory of his mother, Irene Crowther.

The club says the donation will help continue sports activities for almost 100 people with mental and physical disabilities from Welshpool to Brecon, who travel to Maldwyn Leisure Centre.

Club founder Steve Cox, from Staylittle, has praised the Llanidloes community for their donations to the volunteer-run group. In recent years, Llanidloes Ladies’ Day raised £600 and Llanidloes Rotary Club donated £200 towards the work carried out at the Newtown-based club.

“Most of the donations have come from Llanidloes. We’re very grateful to them,” said Mr Cox.

“Llanidloes’ generosity has given us the opportunity to buy more equipment. It’s fantastic.”

Mr Cox said the donations will help pay towards hiring the leisure centre facilities as well as purchasing a new £800 wheelchair for wheelchair basketball and replacing ageing indoor athletics equipment.

Daniel’s father, Derek Crowther, has praised the community for donating hundreds of pounds towards the club which has supported his son during the last four years.

“He loves it there. Since a serious car accident in 2000, he’s needed 24 hour care. The club helps him get out and keeps him moving,” Mr Crowther said.

“My wife fundraised a lot, and I wanted to try and carry it on.

“I can’t believe the generosity of Llanidloes. It’s unbelievable. I can’t thank everyone enough.”

The “100 per cent self-funded” club has grown from three to almost 100 members since it was founded 13 years ago.

“There was a big hole in the market for something like this. It’s grown from nothing to something fantastic. It’s made one hell of a difference to so many people. It’s humorous and fun for a lot of people who don’t usually get involved in sport.

“With donations like this, we can build a future for the club. It would be a dream to get a van to visit schools and associations or buy a building where we can concentrate on disability sports.

“We can do so much more,” Mr Cox added.
