An "unusual odour" sparked an investigation at Welshpool Hospital on Friday morning (June 14) causing disruption to outpatient clinics.

Firefighters were called in to assess the situation at around 11.30am but later handed inquiries over to Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB), after deciding "no further action was required".

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "On Friday, June 14, at 11.31am, firefighters from Welshpool attended an incident at a hospital in Welshpool, following a call of an unusual odour at the site.

"The Fire Service conducted a search of the premises and deemed that no further action was required by the Fire Service.

"The Fire Service handed the incident over to Powys Health Board at 12.58pm."

PTHB has apologised for "any inconvenience" caused to patients after the incident, which it said was caused by an electrical fault.

A spokesperson said: "The problem has been identified as an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) power back up supply unit to the IT network server. The unit was isolated and this has resulted in a temporary disruption to IT and telephone services locally.

"Whilst the fault was being investigated we have also made some temporary changes to services at the hospital. This has included cancellation of an audiology clinic, relocation of a diabetes clinic, and temporary closure of the front entrance. We are working hard to bring services back to normal as quickly as possible."
