A NEW zero waste shop, based in Llandeilo, has used the Heart of Wales Railway Line to collect stock from Llandrindod Wells.

Y Pantri Glas’ vision is to offer the best quality foods and ethical lifestyle products to support the planet.

Cathy Pearce, one of the shop founders said: “We wanted to see if we could reduce our carbon footprint by using the train rather than road delivery so we contacted the Heart of Wales Line to see if they could help”.

Even though there are no freight service any more, The Heart of Wales line was keen to be involved in supporting the project. On May 20, Cathy travelled to Llandrindod Wells Station to collect her goods from Kate Powlesland, owner of Kutis Skincare. She then hopped back on the next train back to Llandeilo which was only 8 minutes later.

Lisa Denison, the newly appointed development manager for The Heart of Wales Line went along too as it coincided with a meeting she was attending.

She said: "We’re so pleased that Y Pantri Glas has taken this initiative and if we can help with any of their future deliveries from small businesses along the line, then that’s great news. We are a Community Rail Partnership and one of our aims is to support local economies along the line, and what better way than transporting small deliveries and cutting carbon emissions."

Kate from Kutis Skincare was also pleased with idea. She said: "We are are also an ethical company which aims to minimise waste and environmental impact, so this is perfect!"

The shop is due to open on Saturday, June 15, and will stock a range of loose foods (bring your own container to fill with the quantity you want) plus toiletries, household and other plastic alternative products.
