The Shropshire Union Canal Society volunteers will resume work to restore a section of the Montgomery Canal near Crickheath soon.

Newt fences were put around the perimeter of the next section to be tackled in phase two, including vegetation clearances, and ecologists have now removed the great crested newts.

After a three month delay work can now resume on phase two – 300 metres in length – by clearing the fresh vegetation from the channel.

When finished in 2020/21 it will link up with the Canal and River Trust Winding Hole Project at Crickheath, which has recently been filled with water.

It is estimated that the complete 735-metre stretch will be restored, in water, and have boats on it by 2020/21.
