WALES might not be the biggest country in the world, but it certainly punches above its weight when it comes to producing famous people.

Welsh actors, sportsmen and women, pop stars and poets have all made their mark both nationally and internationally, and this is certainly the case when it comes to the talent we've produced in Flintshire and Wrexham.

It is these celebrities and famous names that take centre stage on a new map of the UK which illustrates just who are the most-searched for residents on online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, for each UK town.

Created by The Pudding, the People Map of the UK uses four year's worth of Wikipedia search data to determine the top person associated with each town or city in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. And here in north east Wales, there's some surprising results.

Wrexham's footballing heritage is well known of course with the likes of Mark Hughes, Joey Jones and Jason Koumas, all making a mark with the national side. But according to the map it's Robbie Savage who is the town's most searched for resident on Wikipedia.

The 44-year-old had an undistinguished start to his career, failing to make the grade at Manchester United, but after a stint with Crewe, he became a regular for Leicester City in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and performed a similar role for Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers while also playing for Wales 39 times.

Savage gained notoriety for his playing style; in 2008, the Daily Mail labelled him as the dirtiest player in Premier League history, based on numbers of yellow cards received, and in his post-playing career he has continued to be a controversial figure as an opinionated pundit and presenter, not forgetting his appearance as a contestant in 2011's Strictly Come Dancing.

The world of acting is represented with Mark Lewis Jones, who is the most-searched for figure from Rhos, in Wrexham.

The 55-year-old actor's roles include that of a First Order Captain, Moden Canady in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a police inspector in BBC drama series 55 Degrees North, a whaler in the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, soldier Tecton in Troy and Rob Morgan in the series Stella. This year he has appeared in the critically acclaimed drama Chernobyl as General Vladimir Pikalov.

Heading south to Chirk, we come across North East Wales' first brush with its famous literary history with poet R.S.

Thomas appearing as the historical town's most searched for resident. Although born in Cardiff, Thomas was ordained as a priest in 1936 and became the curate of Chirk before becoming a fierce advocate of Welsh nationalism and being hailed as one of the major English language and European poets of the 20th century by critics. He died in 2000, aged 87.

Into Flintshire and it's sport that dominates, with England international footballer Ryan Shawcross registering as the most searched for resident of Buckley. Born in Chester, Shawcross grew up in Buckley, where he attended Mountain Lane Primary School and Elfed High School and played in the youth team at Cymru Alliance club Buckley Town.

He had a trial at Manchester United and was offered a contract at Old Trafford, but it has been at Stoke City where the 31-year-old has really made a name for himself, playing almost 400 games for the Potters and becoming a cult figure at the club due to his no nonsense tackling.

In nearby Connah's Quay, the region's love of boxing becomes apparent, with the name of Tom Doran the most-searched for person from 'The Quay'. 'Dazzlin' Doran won the Prizefighter middleweight tournament, earning £32,000 after stopping Cello Renda in the third round of the final in 2015.

He won his first regional championship - the vacant WBC International middleweight title - in an action-packed two rounds against Luke Keeler the following year, but later that year, Doran faced British middleweight champion, Chris Eubank Jr. and was stopped and knocked down four times after four one-sided rounds. He hasn't boxed professionally since.

Sticking with sport, former Wales football manager, Mike England appears on the map as Holywell's most-searched for resident.

The 77-year-old enjoyed an illustrious career as a centre back with Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham Hotspur and played for his national team 44 times between 1962 and 1974. He managed the Wales team from March 1980 to February 1988, but was sacked as manager after failing to qualify for the 1988 European Championships. That was to be the final job he would ever have in football and he later managed a nursing home in North Wales, and then owned two nursing homes and ran his own timber business.

North Wales' links to the armed services are well-known and are represented on the map by Hawarden's most searched for resident, Admiral Sir Nicholas John Streynsham Hunt.

Hunt was born on November 7, 1930 in Hawarden, the younger son of Brigadier John Montgomerie Hunt of the 5th Battalion, 2nd Punjab Regiment, Indian Army and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Walter Baldwyn Yates CBE. He went on to have an illustrious career in the Royal Navy, becoming executive officer of HMS Ark Royal in 1969 and captain of the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 1978. He was Commander-in-Chief Fleet from 1985 to 1987 and later was deputy managing director at Eurotunnel from 1987 to 1989. He died in 2013, aged 82. At the time of writing, his son Jeremy Hunt MP is one of the favourites to win the race to become leader of the Conservative Party.

It's back to acting with the last north east Wales celebrity to appear on the map, with Welsh stand-up comic, actor, impressionist and writer, Sian Gibson representing Mold.

Gibson, 42, was born and raised in the town, where her father was a builder and her mother a housewife. She joined the local youth theatre in Theatr Clwyd and studied performing arts at Salford University, where she met fellow student Peter Kay, with the pair's longstanding friendship leading to Gibson landing a role in Peter Kay's Car Share in 2015. She had not auditioned for any acting roles for more than a year and was working in a call centre in Chester at the time, but the role of promotions rep Kayleigh Kitson has now made her one of the UK's most popular TV stars.
