Following all the hard work put into the recent SATS exams, pupils from Selattyn School were treated to a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
The trip had a First World War theme as pupils saw the statues/memorials to Victoria Cross winners, Women’s Land Army, the Royal Tank Regiment caterpillar tank memorial, with a wreath laid at the main RAF Memorial.
They were also told of the sad history behind “The Shot at Dawn” memorial and the wooden posts.
A well-earned picnic lunch followed, then some classwork on the various duties of soldiers.
To finish, they visited the Second World War Burma railway museum with the pictures of starving prisoners, which were the subject of much discussion.
And finally to the impressive central memorial to those who have died since 1946, where they were able to pick out and talk about specific names that pupils knew or were connected with.
A most interesting day for everyone, and well worth the trip.
