Commuters in Chirk on Saturday morning would have been treated to see plenty of green-fingered volunteers with a plant sale.

The sale took place outside the entrance to St Mary's Church with plenty sold to help raise funds for the maintenance of the church yard in Church Street.

Ferelith Smith, from a group of volunteers that looks after the church yard, was delighted with how the morning went but insists there is still plenty of opportunity for new blood to come onboard.

"It's gone really well and it's been going strong since about 8am, so that's four hours of selling plants for us," she said.

"I think it's fair to say that we've been well supported by the public too.

"All the monies raised from the plant sale will go to the upkeep and tidying of the church yard here at St Mary's.

"We recently had our green flag inspection by a lady from Keep Wales Tidy, about two weeks ago.

"She said she was impressed with what we do, between the environmental work that we do but also the way we keep it tidy.

"We get that balance and it's down to our team of eight volunteers.

"We meet on a Friday afternoon with tea and cake; anyone who wants to know more about us or think they can volunteer, then they're welcome to come down."
