LLANDRINDOD Wells-based footballer Katie Christopher, who trains at the Metropole Hotel spa facilities, has been selected to join a volunteering expedition to Malawi for the whole of June.

The University of Gloucestershire student will be helping to deliver needs-based workshops and coaching sessions to local organisations, teachers and church leaders.

“As well as teaching sport, we will be helping to teach English, and we in turn will be learning about the culture of the country.

“I am also very much hoping to inspire future generations of children in Malawi to get into sport,” said Katie, who turns 20 later this month.

“I’ve enjoyed playing an active part in my home community for many years.

“And I’ve spent hundreds of hours volunteering each year, but this is a once in a life time opportunity for me.

“I am thrilled to have the chance to share my passion for sport with children in Malawi,” she said.

Katie has been a keen footballer since she was seven years old. She plays for Cheltenham Town Ladies’ FC, having also represented South Powys Football Squads, and Aberystwyth Ladies FC in the Welsh Premier Women’s League and Welsh Women’s League.

Justin Baird-Murray, managing director of the family-run Metropole Hotel & Spa, said: “We admire Katie’s dedication to her own football career, and to helping others achieve success in their own right.

“I am sure she will be a great asset during her month-long visit to Malawi.”

Llandrindod Wells Junior Girls’ Football Club has donated 90 football kits to Katie’s cause.

She is also aiming to raise £1,500 towards the cost of her expedition.
