A steam locomotive called 'Dougal' has returned to Mid Wales following his 8,000-mile round trip to Taiwan.

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway's smallest steam locomotive was on display at a festival celebrating Taiwanese and British railways.

He was built in 1946 for a gasworks in Glasgow and has called the Llanfair Line home since 1967.

Dougal arrived in Welshpool in "pristine condition" on Thursday, April 18, following his epic seven-month adventure to the other side of the world.

County Times:

A group of Taiwanese supporters made a special Welsh Dragon lantern for Dougal to carry home to Powys.

Due to "significant" boiler work, the heritage railway says it cannot allocate resources, both in terms of funding and volunteer time, to carry out the repairs on the locomotive.

Meanwhile, Dougal has returned to the railway’s display shed at Welshpool Raven Square station where panels will be produced to tell the story of his Far East adventure.

Eventually the lantern will be included in a full display documenting the railway’s global connections in a new visitor centre being created at Llanfair Caereinion station.
