WORK is being completed on the new transport interchange in Llandrindod Wells, which is set to open on Monday, April 29.

The work involved the demolition of an old stone railway building, the former Eric Evans Car Sales centre on Station Crescent.

The project was funded by the Welsh Government following a successful Transport Grant bid by Powys County Council (PCC) and local company Coyles completed the engineering works.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The interchange will offer a greatly enhanced and safer designated bus terminus for the regular bus services which visit the town. It will also ease congestion around the town’s railway station, where the north and south bound buses currently meet.”

The council and Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) worked closely together on the interchange to improve the infrastructure for public transport users living and visiting Llandrindod Wells.

PCC Portfolio holder for transport Cllr Aled Davies said: “The interchange will give a huge boost to the town as it will allow people and businesses to travel safely to their destination.

“The collaboration shown in this process between PTHB and the council highlights the successes that can be achieved, that the town and visitors will benefit from.”

Hayley Thomas, director of planning and performance with the PTHB, said: “This will be a vital step forward for travel and transport in Llandrindod Wells, made possible through partnership working between the council and the health board. As well as providing a vital transport interchange for the town, it will help us to continue to improve access and parking for patients, visitors and staff using Llandrindod Wells Memorial Hospital.”
