HOUSEHOLDERS in Powys are being encouraged to take part in a recycling competition to be in with a chance to win £100 of Amazon gift vouchers.

Powys County Council’s Recycling and Waste Team has organised a competition to encourage residents to recycle their small electrical items such as telephones, hair dryers, hair straighteners, electric clocks, toothbrushes, irons, kettles, toasters or games.

From 9am on Saturday, April 13, the team will be running its ‘Let me take a WEEE Selfie’ competition on Facebook. All householders have to do is:

• take three small electrical items to their nearest household waste recycling centre (HWRC) for recycling

• take a selfie in front of the competition banner with their three items

Post the selfie on www.facebook.com/powyscc in the comments of the ‘Let me take a WEEE Selfie’ competition post naming the HWRC visited.

Five £100 Amazon vouchers will be up for grabs – one for each HWRC – with the winners being picked at random after the competition closes on Sunday, May 12, at 6pm. The competition is being sponsored by the European Recycling Platform, the council’s Producer Compliance Scheme for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Waste, said: “With Spring upon us, householders are likely to be having a spring clean and may come across some old or broken small electrical items.

“Many people do not realise that these items can be so easily recycled and so they are thrown out along with the household rubbish instead.

“We want people to recycle as much as they can and I hope this competition will raise awareness and give people the incentive to take their small electrical items to their nearest household waste recycling centre for recycling.”

The competition is open to those living in Powys and over the age of 16.
