Powys Radnor WI Craft Club members have been knitting boobs to help new mums with their breast feeding technique.

They have been creating them in all different shapes, sizes and colours so they can be used for practise for “putting baby to the breast”.

The group, which meets twice monthly in Crossgates, had a visit from Elise Pryor, an NHS infant feeding co-ordinator and health visitor, based in Llanidloes, who came to collect the knitted boobs.

A Powys Radnor Federation of Women’s Institutes (PRFWI) spokeswoman said they will be used by health visitors to help teach breast feeding and added: “Twelve members present, including two visitors from the Rhayader-based Crafting Cousins, had knitted the different shape, size and colour boobs for mums to practise the technique for putting baby to the breast without hurting themselves, or baby, in the process.”

County Times:

Previous requests for knitting aids from the nursing profession had members making up premature baby jackets and blankets and also ‘twiddle muffs’ and aprons for dementia patients with a newer request for drainage bag covers for colostomy bags joining the list.

Ms Pryor promised to get back to the group with any other knitting requests, in particular for more boobs so that each of her practitioners could have one for demonstration purposes.

The next venture is scarves, mitts, gloves, wrist warmers and blankets for the homeless with ‘knitting for charity’ being the aim of the craft club.
