The bookshelves at Ysgol Rhiw-Bechan are filled with brand new books after they won a World Book Day competition organised by a Newtown supermarket.
Morrisons teamed up with the National Literacy Trust to deliver a bundle of 15 books to the Tregynon primary school after they were judged the ‘Best Book Reading School’ in the area.
Pupils said they enjoyed dressing up as characters from their favourite books and getting “so caught in a story, we feel like we’re actually in the book”.
Headteacher Allyson Whitticase said: “Our pupils have a very positive attitude to reading in both Welsh and English, and it is something which we are very proud of and want to sustain here at Ysgol Rhiw-Bechan.
"Many of our pupils participate in the annual reading challenge set by Powys Library services every summer, winning certificates and medals. We were also lucky enough to attend the Biggest Book Show at Theatre Hafren on World Book Day in March this year, where the children had the opportunity to meet several published Welsh authors."
She added: “Up until a few years ago our pupils had the opportunity of borrowing library books from a ‘Library bus’ which visited the school termly but sadly this had to be stopped due to funding cuts, something which the children would love to see brought back to schools in Powys.”
