Colleagues at Llanidloes Sports Centre have been making a splash for cash during the world’s largest annual fundraising swim.

Theresa Lloyd and Nick Bray channelled their “inner mermaid” and swam like the mythical aquatic creature wearing a swim tail and completing a 5,000-kilometre swimathon to raise money for Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK.

They have broken their fundraising target of £400 and are hoping to raise even more for two worthy causes.

“We did it!! A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far... much appreciated,” Theresa said.

She added: “Anyone who’s been a mermaid will know this will not be easy... it’s hard work being a mermaid!”

“We’d like to thank Planet Mermaid for supplying a tail for Nick to be able to take part in the event!”

From March 29 to March 31, more than 21,000 swimmers headed down to more than 600 pools across the UK to raise money for the world’s leading cancer charity and a terminal illness care charity.

Marie Curie praised the pair for their achievement held at Llanidloes Sports Centre.

“Well done, Theresa and Nick! You both look awesome! Thank you so much for taking the plunge for us. Hope you had a well-earned rest over the weekend!”

Three of Theresa and Nick’s sports centre colleagues also took part in the swimathon – Alicia Higgins, Dylan Leach and Tom Morris – also known as the ‘Llani Minnows’. They took on the challenge to raise £900 for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie as part of the Freedom Leisure Corporate Challenge.

There is still time to donate here towards the Llani Minnows on their fundraising page.
