Community groups and organisations are being encouraged to take part in a new project launched to boost people's mental health in their area.

Side by Side Cymru aims to improve peer support in Radnorshire and North Brecknock thorough activities such as arts and craft, sport or self-help groups, or something as simple as a regular coffee morning.

Mental wellbeing charity Mid Powys Mind and the Welsh Government are supporting the project by offering training, networking and small grants in order to develop existing peer support and help new initiatives.

Lorna Jones, Side by Side Cymru Project Lead at Mid Powys Mind, says she's "incredibly pleased" to role out the project in Mid Wales.

“This is an opportunity not to be missed, to recognise and build on the incredible work already being done in our communities by ordinary men and women doing extraordinary things, giving their time and commitment along with others to run carers groups, clubs, societies, support groups where those attending support each other through everything life has to throw at them.

She added: "I have been humbled by peoples response and willingness to devote freely of their time and the commitment they give to their own communities".

Brecon and Radnorshire AM Kirsty Williams attended a Mid Powys Mind networking event to raise awareness of Side by Side Cymru in Llandrindod Wells on March 28.

She said: “It was really interesting to hear about the work that is being planned. Developing connections in people’s communities can have a real boost for wellbeing, and ensuring this work is better supported should bring real benefits.

“If peer support is something you’re already doing, or something you’re looking to do, I’d encourage you to look into the Side by Side Cymru project and see whether it could benefit you.”
