A BUILDER who was left wheelchair-bound after an accident at work is set to receive a helping hand from his fellow tradesmen.

Volunteers from the band of Builders charity will spend a week working on the home of Peter Cape, 45, of Pen-y-Garnedd near Llanfyllin.

Peter cannot leave his house unaided and is restricted to two rooms of his home after falling from a ladder in and severely fracturing his heels while working in Whitchurch in December.

He has previously volunteered on other projects will upgrade his house to make it and surroundings more accessible.

"I felt very much like I didn't want to take support away from someone who might need it more than I do, but I was told in no uncertain terms that I really did need it and I had to deal with it!", he said.

"It's a massive honour and it's going to make a huge, huge, difference to my physical recovery and mental health."

After spending a week in hospital and undergoing numerous scans and x-rays, Peter returned to hospital in January for 10 days to have an operation on his left foot.

As well as financial concerns from not being able to work, Peter faces a tough road to recovery, with "another year or two" of recovery and surgeries ahead.

He is was full of praise for the "amazing" staff at the Orthopaedic in Gobowen, where he had received treatment since his accident.

While a full recovery is "off the cards," Peter hopes to reduce his mobility issues as much as possible.

The team of builders will arrive in Pen-y-Garnedd on Good Friday and will stay for around a week.

Wrexham-based builder Adrian Clarke has donated three houses for the team to stay in during their eight-day project.

Band of Builders, which gained charity status earlier in 2019 after carrying out numerous projects to help members of the UK construction trade over the past few years, is planning to help Peter by making alterations and adaptations to his home so it is wheelchair-friendly.

Dan Harris, from Band of Builders, said: “Peter’s home isn’t currently wheelchair-friendly – he is unable to access the bathroom or kitchen and is only able to go outside with the help of his family.

“Our aim is to make Peter’s home more accessible to help aid his lengthy recovery process. He has given so much to Band of Builders to help others – it’s only fitting that we look after him when he needs it.”
