A NEW book recording the history of one of the area’s most famous hotels is set to be officially launched next month.
“Lake Vyrnwy, the story of a sporting hotel” by John Baynes, George Westropp and Simon Baynes will be released at a special launch event to be held on Thursday, April 18, between 6.30pm to 8pm.
Since 1890, Lake Vyrnwy Hotel has been welcoming visitors to the shores of the beautiful Lake that it calls its home.
The story of the evolution of the hotel runs alongside the story of the Lake itself, which saw construction of the first large masonry dam in the country.
“George Westropp and I have revised and updated the book that he wrote with my father about the hotel in 1992,” said co-author Simon Baynes.
“This book tells the fascinating story of a hotel built as part of the extraordinary enterprise to construct the Lake itself, at the time the largest artificial reservoir in Europe.
“Lake Vyrnwy captures in vivid detail the development and evolution of this archetypal Victorian sporting hotel, famed as a fishing destination and still, today, an important part of the local community, economy and culture.”
