Llandrindod Wells councillor Jon Williams says he's "very sad" after resigning as the town's mayor - and fired a parting shot at the town council for ignoring the concerns of residents.

Speaking to the County Times this week Cllr Williams said he was stepping down as Mayor, chairman and member of Llandrindod Wells town council, but would continue as Powys County Councillor for Llandrindod East and West.

"I'm disappointed, I'm very sad. I've been mayor for three years now and it's been an honour," he said.

"I don't feel I have had the support from the town council over the last 12 months, who have been putting their own interests before the people of the town. I felt I could no longer stay in an organisation that in my opinion does not put our town first.

"When I was at the community spirit awards it really brought it home to me actually - there's so many people doing brilliant things in our town."

Cllr Williams, who has been the mayor of Llandrindod Wells for three years, added that he had been "overwhelmed" with the support he had received from the town's residents since he announced he was resigning.

"A lot has gone on in the last 12 months, but if the town council won't put its own house in order I can no longer be part of it. I'll still be around doing things for the benefit of town and will carry on as County Councillor.

"There have been a few issues which I've raised on several occasions and I've just been totally ignored. I think the whole system needs to be cleared out so they can start doing things correctly, and start listening to the residents rather than going ahead with their own plans.

When contacted by the County Times, a spokesperson for Llandrindod Wells Town Council said: "The Town Council does not wish to comment on this matter at this time."
