A Mid Wales AM has asked for Assembly time this week to question the Welsh Government about the collapse of a major construction company charged with the building of three new Powys schools.

Last week it was confirmed that Swansea based firm Dawnus, who were given contracts by Powys County Council to build two new schools at Welshpool, and the new Ysgol Bro Hyddgen in Machynlleth, had gone into administration.

Work on the English-medium school on land next to Welshpool High School is well underway with completion scheduled for this September, however no building work has begun at the other two sites.

Labour Mid and West Wales AM Joyce Watson said she would be seeking "urgent answers" from economy minister Ken Skates this week.

“My immediate concern is for the workers and their families, and for those left out of pocket throughout the supply chain – they deserve urgent answers," she said.

“We need to know, too, what is happening with the projects underway and in the pipeline, including two new primary schools in Welshpool, a replacement all-through school in Machynlleth and the new road in Fishguard.”

Mrs Watson, who is chair of the Assembly’s construction cross-party group, has tabled a ‘topical question’. It will be put to economy minister Ken Skates on Wednesday (20 March), if agreed by Presiding Officer Elin Jones.
