A DOUBLE bad weather warning for Powys has been issued by the Met Office for gusty winds today and heavy rains at the weekend.

A spell of gusty winds on Thursday has prompted a Yellow Warning which runs until 1pm today.

This warns gusts of 45-55 mph are likely, perhaps as much as 60-65 mph very briefly in a few places, accompanied by a short burst of heavy rain. Winds easing a little during the afternoon, though remaining gusty.

Another Yellow alert issued for Saturday predicts heavy and persistent rain which is expected to affect Wales and northwest England through Saturday, with the potential for some flooding.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "A developing area of low pressure is expected to track across Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland on Saturday.

"In association with this, an extensive area of moderate to heavy rain will develop; the largest rainfall totals expected across the higher ground of Wales where over 100 mm could fall, this also accompanied by very strong winds.

"Elsewhere within the warning area, 40-80 mm is expected. Some uncertainty does remain however for the precise track of the low pressure, which will have a bearing on the exact locations which will see the heaviest rain."

This warning runs from midnight to midnight on Saturday.
