A retained firefighter who has served the Llanidloes community for more than three decades has hung up his kit for the final time.

Anthony “Tonner” Evans, who has retired after 33-and-a-half years of service, was presented with a silver firefighter’s axe by crew members at the station where he first joined in 1985.

Reflecting on his time with the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Tonner said he was amazed at the progression of modern technology over the decades which have kept him and his crew mates safe during emergency call-outs.

Wishing Tonner a happy retirement was Llanidloes Station Watch Manager Greg Jerman. He said the commitment shown by Tonner was a “fantastic achievement”.

Mr Jerman said: “He’s a loyal servant to the community who has a marvellous sense of community spirit.”

He added: “He’s definitely a massive character at the station. Full of mischief who also likes to joke around and tease people. He’s the Private Pike from Dad’s Army’s of Llanidloes Station!”

Mr Jerman paid tribute to The Evans family for their patience during that time when family day outs were cancelled and disrupted sleep from emergency call outs.

He said: “It’s a massive commitment being a retained firefighter. It’s not a nine to five job, it’s 24 hours.

“Everyone at Llanidloes Station is grateful for his wonderful service to the community.”

A talented lawn bowler, Tonner represented the Welsh Fire Service Team and had won medals during his long-service.

In his main career, he works as a grave digger in the town which he will continue to do following his retirement from the fire service. He now plans to “take it easy” by spending more time with his family and fishing at Llyn Clywedog.

Rob Rayner, North Powys Area Command at Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We would like to thank his dedicated service over the last 33-and-a-half-year service. It’s truly amazing.”

He added: “A special thanks to his family for all the support that they have given to allow him to respond and protect the community of Llanidloes and North Powys.”
