MOTORISTS in Newtown have been told to steer clear of a major route into Newtown while roadworks take place following the completion of the town’s bypass.

The A483 Pool Road is closed between the roundabout and near Newtown Cricket Club until Sunday, February 24.

“A combination of works including surfacing, bridge inspection and footways is being carried out along Pool Road, Newtown between the Tesco traffic lights and the new Pool Road roundabout on the bypass,” said a spokesperson for Traffic Wales.

“The work is being carried out at short notice because it can only be done under a full road closure when the new bypass is open, and it is only very recently that a date has been set for the opening of the bypass. A closure will allow the works to be carried out safely, in a more timely manner and will help minimise traffic disruption through Newtown.”

Powys County Council’s passenger transport unit said buses would not serve Pool Road during the closure period, and that the T12 and X75 routes would be diverted via the new bypass on their way to Abermule.
