IN AUGUST this year, Serena Phillips, a Year 13 student at Welshpool Sixth Form, will travel to Honduras in Central America to live and volunteer as an English teacher to local students of primary and secondary school age.

Serena will represent a charity called Project Trust, based in the UK, which provides overseas communities with young volunteers to help out with the lack of English teachers in their schools.

She said: “Project Trust recognises the importance of people from other countries learning English as a way of increasing their life and career options, as well as providing young people like me with the opportunity to live in a completely different country, immersed in a different culture, and often learn a new language.

“During my year in Honduras I will work hard in contributing to the education of many students, and hope to integrate myself into the local community there and become a proficient speaker of the national language, Spanish.”

As part of the challenge, Serena will be raising £6,200 for Project Trust, who will be providing support, resources needed for teaching and some financial aid for all of their volunteers during their year abroad.

Serena said: “I would be extremely grateful for any donations towards my fundraising target to help me enable Project Trust to continue its valuable work.”
