Llanidloes' super newsagent and retailer, Trudy Davies, was crowned Community Champion of the Year at a prestigious NFRN Awards on February 12 at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

The Community Champion of the Year award highlights the community values and hard work done by local retailers.

Not just a local business owner, Trudy, of Woosnam & Davies has dedicated herself to supporting local charities, setting up events and getting involved in fundraising for a variety of causes.

A busy lady, Trudy splits her time between running her newsagents and bakery and attending events, many of which she has helped to organise.

Amongst the impressive list of charities that Trudy has helped are St John’s Ambulance, Cancer Research, Girl Guides and a variety of local causes such as hospices, mother and baby groups and community centre projects.

Trudy’s work has not gone unnoticed, with a variety of her initiatives being taken on by the council, including defibrillators posted around the town and improvements to the millennium gardens.

Trudy has been described as “an unwavering role model” and that her hard work has “made the town a cleaner, more eco friendly, family friendly place to live in.”

Although Woosnam and Davies does not currently offer a home delivery service for its newspapers, Trudy always goes the extra mile if a customer is unwell and makes the effort to deliver them personally.

The NFRN represents over 15,000 independent retailers across the UK and Ireland.

2019 sees the NFRN celebrating its centenary so this year’s awards ceremony, at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, took place alongside a special dinner to mark this milestone.

The glittering awards ceremony was hosted by famous broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald.
