A formidable logging machine in the shape of a horse from Holland that lives near Llanfair Caereinion is set to hit our television screens.

Elza, a 22-year-old Dutch draft mare, and her co-worker Nick Burton, restore woodland surrounding Ceunant Farm, at Melin y Grug, with a modern approach to the traditional method of horse logging.

The duo are about to star in Secret Life of Farm Animals, a programme that tests farm animal intelligence that has rarely been seen on television before.

Nick is one of only four horse loggers in Wales who are continuing the skill of horse logging. There are no fossil fuels involved, only an experienced horse from the Netherlands which Nick says is friendlier for the environment.

Nick said: “Horses can get to places that vehicles can’t go and it shows that you don’t have to get machinery. Looking back to the past, the methods are better in terms of a sustainable future and environment.”

Don't miss Elza and Nick on Secret Life of Farm Animals tonight (Friday, February 8) on BBC One at 8.30pm or catch-up later on BBC iPlayer
