CONSULTATION procedures have started for the second phase of the active travel facilities at Presteigne.

The moves will ensure a reduction in inconsiderate parking, availability of safer walking and cycling routes, reduced vehicular speeds and creation of a safe crossing point.

Consultation on the new moves had been approved by Powys County Council portfolio holder, Cllr Phyl Davies under delegated powers.

The first phase was completed last March with funding by the Welsh Government Safe Routes in Communities grant of £400,000 and by Powys County Council.

The new proposal will introduce further parking restrictions to protect junctions and narrow sections of the safe routes, to enhance the safety of the active travel route users while minimising the use of on street parking within the town.

There is also a 20mph zone proposed, which will have traffic calming within it, making the zone self-enforcing, and keeping traffic speeds low.

Within the 20mph zone, at the location where most pedestrians and cyclists would cross to access the school or leisure centre, it is proposed to install a raised zebra crossing to create a safe crossing point for all users of the active travel route and also act as part of the traffic calming within the 20 mph zone.

County Cllr for Presteigne, Beverley Baynham said: “I fully support phase two of the active travel route in Presteigne.

“Phase one of the active travel route in Presteigne has been a huge success and an asset to the community. To be able to complete phase two would be fantastic not only for the town and its residents but also the environment.”
