Weather forecasters say more snow could be on the way tonight and in the early hours of tomorrow morning, after high ground in Mid Wales got a dusting today.

The MET Office have put a yellow warning for ice over most of Wales as temperatures plummeted today, with forecasters warning of potentially treacherous conditions on untreated surfaces first thing tomorrow.

The warning said: "Ice will form in places later on Tuesday afternoon and overnight into Wednesday, especially where wintry showers leave surfaces wet.

"Further hail, sleet and snow showers are also likely at times. Accumulations of several centimetres are likely in places, mainly above 200 metres."

Forecasters say a blast of snow in the early hours of Wednesday should give way to sunny spells later in the day.

A spokesperson said: “For some of us we already have snow, what we have also are icy patches, a risk on untreated surfaces, pavements, and rural areas if you are travelling, bear that in mind we have had a band of rain go through, temperatures are low behind, so freezing on contact for some.

“Sunny spells will be the order of the day for some of us. Wintry showers prolific, and there is also a cold wind, so there is a lot going on with the weather today.

“You can see this band of rain, sleet and hill snow which is now all but cleared, but behind it, we are still pulling in all of those showers and still are wintry in nature, so a mixture of snow, sleet, hail and thunder and lightning in them.”

Meanwhile, Powys County Council say gritters are out this evening and overnight, and will also be working first thing in the morning to keep the county's roads clear.

"Gritters (with snow ploughs) will cover all primary routes in Powys from 4pm on the 22nd January and again from 11pm. They will also cover all primary routes in Powys from 4am on the 23rd January 2019," said an update on the council's website.
