FEARS that a day care centre in Brecon is closing, have been scotched.

A question on the Arosfa Day Centre in Brecon, will be asked to adult services cabinet member, Stephen Hayes, at the Full Council meeting on Thursday, January 24.

Conservative Councillor for Yscir, Iain McIntosh, is asking the question as claims have been made in Brecon that the centre’s future is at stake.

Cllr McIntosh asks: “Can the portfolio holder and cabinet member for adult services please let me know if there were any plans to close the Arosfa Day Centre, in Camden Road before December 13 (2018).

Cabinet member for adult services and Independent councillor for Montgomery, Stephen Hayes, replied: “I can confirm that while much work has been ongoing with the day services for older people following the cabinet decision on the service in December 2016, there were no plans to close the Arosfa Day Centre before December 13 (2018).”

In December 2016 – the cabinet discussed a report based on a consultation held on Day Care Services for Older People including Day Centres.

The cabinet member then as now was Cllr Stephen Hayes.

He argued following  the results of the consultation he was proposing that a reduced budget for Day Care Services for Older People (including Day Centres) be maintained.

At that meeting over two years ago it was recommended that the council restored £1.1 million in funding to enable the continuation of a reduced day service.

They were also to continue to providing this funding until such time as community based support / early intervention services are properly trialled and evaluated.

Cllr Hayes, with support from the head of transformation and director of social services, was also allowed to start discussions with town and community councils or other statutory, community, private or third sector bodies on the management of Day Time Activities.

On December 13 last year, Brecon Town Council held an election.

During that election campaign the future of Arosfa was questioned.
