Powys Plaid Cymru leader Cllr Elwyn Vaughan has called for 'sensible cross-party discussion' to break the government's Brexit deadlock.

Speaking after the comprehensive defeat for the Conservative government in Tuesday's EU Withdrawal deal, he said he wanted to see assurances for Wales in place of 'petty party politics'.

"It must be seen as a mess. There needs to be a sensible cross-party discussion about a positive way forward. and less intransigence," he said.

"There are three fundamental things for Wales: the fact that we receive £680m a year at present from EU funding, that our upland farms and other sectors are dependent on open access to EU markets, and that we don't see a Westminster power grab from Wales.

"We need assurances on those elements for Wales which is for everyone's benefit and at present we don't have any. At the end of the day, it's the Welsh economy and communities we're concerned about and not petty party politics."

Earlier this week, National Plaid Cymru leader Adam Pryce said the deadlock on Brexit proved the Westminster political system was 'broken, deadlocked and incapable'.

"What Brexit has shown, with devastating clarity, is that the British political system is broken, deadlocked and incapable of reaching a consensus," he said.

"In these circumstances, there is a chance that the Brexit decision will be driven, unwillingly to be sure, back to the people for a further referendum, for a Peoples’ Vote.

"That is something we in Plaid Cymru would welcome but if it comes that vote cannot just be a re-run of what we went through in 2016. This time Remain cannot just mean staying with the status quo.

"A vote to Remain also has to be a vote to Reform, a vote to renew and re-generate. It cannot be simply a vote for the Europe that presently exists. It must be for the Europe that can be – social, democratic, decentralised and diverse."
