Plans to renovate a Breconshire arts venue are set to go on display this month.

Architects drawings for a new-look Wyeside Arts Centre, Builth Wells, have been unveiled by London architects De Matos Ryan this week and full plans will be presented to the public at an open evening on Monday, January 14.

They say the study identifies 'innovative ways to improve Wyeside’s offer to its community', with the ground floor set to be opened up as an open plan public-facing space, improving access and visibility.

"The creation of a new gathering place above the market theatre will re-establish the 19th-century assembly rooms in a rooftop location with unparalleled views of the river Wye," said a spokesperson for De Matos Ryan.

"Designed as a flexible space with a bar, it will be used for pop-up events and trade fairs, exhibitions and private events, and also double up as a small performance space for comedy and jazz. Its inflected roof references the original market hall gables lost in the 1970s"

Last year, the centre secured grant funding to enable a feasibility study to look at the future development of the venue. The study was funded through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government. The project is also being funded by the Arts Council of Wales.

Jill Mustafa, Wyseide's General Manager said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for Wyeside as it gives us the chance to take a step back from the day-to-day running of the business and really start to plan our future.

"Wyeside has been going from strength to strength in recent years, but we’re now at a time where we need to focus on the next chapter of our story.”

The open evening is set to be held on Monday, January 14 at 7pm, hosted at the Wyeside Arts Centre.
