A flock of sheep and a car had to be rescued from the floods in Welshpool this morning.

Heavy rain overnight led to rivers bursting their banks and large areas of the floodplain filling up with water.

Moors Straight was one of the worst hit areas.

There were reports of sheep swimming in the flood water.

Hayley Williams said on Facebook: "Just drove past and there are sheep in the water with only their heads showing poor things."

Farmers were contacted and the sheep are believed to have been rescued and placed in a warm shed.

Welshpool firefighters rescued another 30 sheep from water in the Welshpool area.

Meanwhile, near Welshpool Airport, a car broke down in the water and had to be towed out.

Welshpool's water rescue team attended the incident at 9.41am.

Drivers were advised by the police to avoid the area and take local diversions.

Welshpool Fire Service said: "Please avoid driving into any flood water. You never know how deep it is or what may be underneath."
