People have been travelling far and wide to see, quite possibly, the best Christmas lights display in Mid Wales.

For the last 14 years Barry and Marie Beehan have decorated their Llanelwedd home, near Builth Wells, with an abundance of lights for the whole community to enjoy.

“I haven’t got a clue how many lights there are but it takes ages to put them up! It’s so lovely to see so many children’s faces light up when they see it,” Marie said.

“My husband started it 14 years ago just for fun for the grandchildren. It escalated from there and he’s kept adding more and more every year. He’s like a big kid!”

The impressive display, which includes a grotto, attracts visitors annually from as far afield as Swansea to see The Beehan’s Christmas spectacle.

The lights were switched-on on December 15 but Barry continues to add a few to the display.

The couple, who have lived at The Crescent for 42 years, say the electricity bill isn’t as bad or as big as everyone thinks it is.

“It’s only on for a couple of weeks. There’s enough misery in the world so it’s worth it to bring joy to the community,” Marie added.

Local resident Lee Jarvis said all the children in the area “love it” and it makes their Christmas.

“The display gets bigger and bigger each year, but people have tried to pay money to look at display, to contribute to costs but Barry is very humble and won’t accept anything.”

The lights are on between 5 and 10pm every night until Sunday, January 6.
