"Exploding bulbs" led to Christmas lights in Llandrindod Wells being switched off due to health and safety concerns.

The Mayor of the town, Cllr Jon Williams, was apologetic about the decision to turn off the lights on Middleton Street on Wednesday, December 19.

The festive display was switched off upon recommendation of Cllr Williams and approval from the Town Council.

It is currently unclear if the supplier of the lights will be able to get the display up and running again before Christmas.

In a post on Facebook, Cllr Williams said: "I'm sorry to report that due to health and safety concerns the Christmas lights in Middleton street will be turned off from today.

"This follows a report that the bulbs have been exploding and falling to the ground.

"The town council agreed, on my recommendation, that this is an unsafe situation and they should be turned off.

"I have contacted our supplier but if they can sort the situation out before Christmas is unclear.

"I'm sorry as I have tried extremely hard to keep this display working but can do no more."

In the comments, many Llandrindod residents were understanding and praised the mayor for his hard work.

Becky Dey said: "What a shame after all your hard work but totally agree as it's unsafe they need to go off.

"No one wants bits of bulb falling on them. Gorgeous lights around other parts of town and all the shop windows look amazing too."

Pat Kennedy said: "Nobody has worked harder than you to keep these lights on, Jon. So sad about the outcome."

Annette Le-Grande said: "All you can do is your best Jon, and you have certainly done that, thank you for your perseverance."
