AM Russell George spread Christmas joy during a visit to Newtown to announce the winner of his Christmas card competition.

The winning entry was drawn by six-year-old Madison Davies, from Treowen Primary School, which Mr George described as a “lovely picture which encapsulated the spirit of Christmas”.

The hand-drawn card shows Father Christmas and his reindeers flying above sheep surrounded by a blanket of snow.

Madison’s winning entry will now be used as the Montgomeryshire AM’s official Christmas card which will be sent to individuals and organisations across Wales.

Mr George said: “Over the eight years I have run my Christmas Card competition I have I received entries of very high standard. Madison Davies designed a lovely picture which encapsulated the spirit of Christmas.

"My Christmas cards have now been printed and I’ve been busy writing cards which I’ll be sending out to organisations and individuals not just in Montgomeryshire but across Wales. I hope to be holding the competition again next year and I hope to have even more children to take part.

"I was pleased to announce that Madison was the winner at Treowen Primary School’s Assembly last week."

Mr George travelled to Treowen Primary School to present Madison with a certificate and the first copy of her hand-drawn card in front of her schoolfriends and teachers.

Treowen Primary School headteacher Lisa Swanson said: “We’re really, really proud of Madison.

“It’s lovely to have one of our pupils stand out with something like this and it was great to have a visit from Russell which the children really enjoyed,” said Ms Swanson.
