A FREELANCE butcher from Welshpool was awarded runner-up in the Welsh Butcher of the Year competition after filling-in as a last minute replacement for defending champion Dan Allen-Raftery from Llanidloes.

Jon Whittington was runner-up alongside Chris Lewis from South Wales in the annual competition at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in Builth Wells.

The butcher who claimed the Welsh Butcher of the Year title was Craig Holly from Abergavenny.

Chris Jones, head of the food and drink business unit at Cambrian Training Company, said: “It was a very high scoring final and all three butchers had a good work ethos – clean, tidy, methodical and skilful.

“You would never have known that it was Chris and Jon’s first competition. They looked like seasoned professionals and it was a really good, close final.”

The finalists faced a true test of their butchery skills over three tasks in front of an audience in the Cambrian Training Pavilion at the Royal Welsh Showground.
