It was fourth time lucky for Llanwrtyd Wells firefighters as they were chosen as Station of the Year at the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Celebrating Success Awards held at Swansea’s Waterfront Museum.

“We finally got it! We’ve been in the top three for the past four years, so it’s nice to achieve it,” said Steve Amor, Llanwrtyd Wells Fire Station Watch Manager.

The small on-call fire station of 12 crew was described as “truly exceptional” at the awards night. The firefighters achieved 100 per cent availability to incidents and have conducted several community events such as defibrillator awareness lessons in the community. The team raised £25,000 within eight months to replace their old co-responder Land Rover; a vehicle which is used to attend medical emergencies.

Llanwrtyd Wells was chosen out of the 58 stations in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Swansea, and was praised for its “exemplar performance”.

Watch Manager Amor said: “They’re so, so proud to serve the community. It’s all done as a team, that’s how we achieve everything.

“They do the job for the enjoyment of helping others.”
