A RUNDOWN grade II goods shed which is being transformed into a ‘hub’ for start ups and will enable people to test trade products will one day be run by the community.

The Journal enjoyed an exclusive tour of the construction site, located on the walkway at Meliden, Prestatyn.

Due to open in Easter 2019, the £1.2 million revamp - called Y Shed - will boast a cafe, artisan unit, heritage facility, bike hire facility and four units for new start-ups or small enterprises.

With views over to the sea, the cafe will seat 50 covers in total and there will be seating for 24 outside.

Project leaders, charitable housing association Grŵp Cynefin and Meliden Residents Action Group, aim to create a real ‘community vibe' and will showcase old Meliden with artefacts and photographs.

The vision is to develop a team of volunteers who will run the hub in five years time.

Mair Edwards, community initiatives manager for Grŵp Cynefin, said: “There was a picture that the architect put on social media with a walk through with how the development is looking and it is almost identical which is great, we haven’t had to cut back on anything

“When we were approached by the community a few years ago and they asked if we could support this type of project, it is exactly the type of thing we like to do.

“We have got four business units at the back and they are going to be affordable rents.

“We have also got opportunities for local people to test trade products, so if someone is making honey for example, we would like to be able to sell it in the shop for them.

“Our role, as Grŵp Cynefin, is to come in and make sure it happens and to make this a sustainable asset so in a few years they (the community/volunteers) can take it over in their own right.”

The heritage interpretation will feature old glass bottles - one dating back to 19th century - found on site. Project leaders have been working with a historian and stories, from residents, have been captured.

School children will be able to take advantage of interactive material and heritage activities.

Y Shed is looking to partner up with a someone who would be interested in running the cafe on a lease agreement. Expression of interests must be received by the end of November and people will then be invited to pitch early December. Email yshed@grwpcynefin.org
