A LEISURE centre is set to be kitted out with state-of-the-art gym facilities.

Ruthin Leisure Centre will receive a revamp with the installation of new gym equipment this week.

The work will ensure that Ruthin residents have the same standard of equipment that Denbighshire Leisure provides across the county.

The project starts today (November 19) and the leisure centre will close on Friday, November 23 to allow for the final installation of the new equipment, including upper and lower body weights machines, free weights and north Wales' first 'SKILL Bike' – a stationary bike with a real gear shift that allows the user to experience the challenges of outdoor cycling.

Once reopened on Saturday, November 24 the centre will launch an exclusive VIP Week for Denbighshire Leisure members, giving them the first opportunity to use and familiarise themselves with the new equipment alongside qualified instructors.

Cllr Bobby Feeley, the council's cabinet lead member for well-being and independence, said: “At a time when most authorities are implementing cuts to their leisure services, in Denbighshire we are bucking that national trend. We actually see the benefit that the ongoing investment in Denbighshire has on people’s health and well-being and that is a great and valid reason to continue the investment county-wide.

“Demand for our facilities is increasing year on year and we are meeting that demand by providing additional classes of all kinds and investing in our fitness suites, to make sure our kit is fit for purpose and meets the needs of our residents."

Some minor works will also be taking place during opening hours on the Saturday.
