A fundraiser from Malpas is celebrating raising more than £60,000 for charity.

Joyce Rogers started raising money for Cancer Research 29 years ago, after her husband Terry died from the disease.

Since then, Joyce has held coffee mornings, completed annual sponsored walks and hosted fashion shows to raise money for Cancer Research and associated needs.

These are just a few examples, however, of just how Joyce has raised money. The kitchen assistant at Bishop Heber High School has also hosted pub quizzes, summer lunches and bingo nights, as well as receiving donations, which has all gone towards her grand total of more than £60,000 for charity.

"It all started after my husband died – I wanted to do it for him," said 68-year-old Joyce.

"My son now has a brain tumour. Cancer has affected my family so much, but I feel that raising money for charity has really helped.

"We started raising money for Cancer Research and associated needs as this means that money goes directly to hospitals and hospices that help patients and their families."

A coffee morning in Malpas Jubilee Hall on Saturday was one of the last events that Joyce is hosting as a fundraiser.

"I've been hosting coffee mornings since 2009, so I think it's time I had a rest," said Joyce.

"I couldn't have done any of this without the people that have helped me along the way. A few people have been with me helping out for a long time, but I really appreciate everyone's efforts."
