Llanerfyl’s Beryl Vaughan has completed two huge hikes including an ancient trail in Spain to raise more than £2,000 for a hospital which treated her potentially life-threatening condition.

Beryl was treated by surgeons at Royal Stoke Hospital after suffering two aneurysms in September 2017.

To thank them for the treatment and care, she decided to raise money for the hospital’s neurosurgery ward by walking more than 200 miles with her daughter, Sarah, to show the world that no aneurysm was enough to knock Beryl down.

This year, Beryl and Sarah hiked the 85-mile path along Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches across the north of England, and completed 131 miles of the final stage of the Camino Royale Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage in northern Spain.

Beryl Vaughan took part in the Cerddwn Ymlaen across Wales walk with classical Welsh singer Rhys Meirion which raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Wales Air Ambulance in 2014

Beryl said: “Walking for Royal Stoke neurosurgery ward has given me such pleasure and enjoyment. The treatment I received was fantastic, as was the care by all staff – nothing was too much trouble. I do hope that I can raise even more for such a worthy amazing hospital. Hadrian’s Wall was especially interesting as we walked from The Banks Promenade to Wallsend. We saw the remains of the Wall from the beginning as there is not a lot remaining at the end.

“The experience of walking The Camino was thrilling. We walked through small villages and hamlets, vineyards, eucalyptus trees, farmlands and farmyards. The churches along the way were delightful and arriving at Santiago with hundreds of people all wanting their certificates and the Mass at the Cathedral was quite something else,” she added.

Suzzanne Jones, Ward 228 Deputy Sister, said: “Beryl really has gone above and beyond to support us here in neurosurgery, and we are so thankful for her fundraising efforts. The amount she has raised is an absolute testament to her strength and positive attitude, and the incredible person Beryl is.”

Beryl is still accepting donations which can be made here
