THERE was a special commemoration in Wem as beacons were lit on the evening of Armistice Day to mark the end of the First World War.
Crowds gathered at the Wem Recreation Ground to watch the beacon lighting as part of the national Battle’s Over Armistice centenary commemorations.
Wem Jubilee Band performed at the beacon lighting ceremony, while Wem town mayor Councillor Connie Granger welcomed the visitors.
She gave a speech and read a poem at the start of the service, which was officiated by Rector Rev Nick Heron.
The Last Post was played by Ruth Wilson, which was followed by a two-minute silence, and then The Reveille.
The beacon was lit by the watch manager of Wem Fire brigade, assisted by his team.
As the beacon was lit, St Peter’s Church bell was tolled 100 times.
