Pupils from Ysgol Bro Cynllaith, Llansilin have been involved in a special charity day in support of the armed forces and their families.

For this year’s Red, White and Blue Day, a national fundraising campaign for schools, the school commemorated the end of the First World War by encouraging children to come to school dressed in the colours of the Union Flag.

Red, White and Blue Day was founded in 2011 by the three national service charities: ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, and The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

Children were asked to come to school dressed in red, white and blue clothing, and donate £1 in support of service families.

Ysgol Bro Cynllaith will be researching soldiers from the Llansilin area, who took part in the First World War to create a long-lasting memorial for the village, using poppies on canvas.

They will also be collecting donations for these charities in the harvest service and taking part in the commemorations involving the whole community on Armistice day.

Rhian Jones, the headteacher of Ysgol Bro Cynllaith, said: “We think it is vitally important that the pupils join with the community to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

“Thirty soldiers from in and around Llansilin lost their lives and we will never forget them.”
