A MACHYNLLETH based rail passengers group will continue to press for improvements to the service, its annual meeting was told.
The Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth Rail Passengers’ Association (SARPA) gathered at the White Lion Hotel, Machynlleth, as the takeover of the service by new rail company KeolisAmey was set to take effect this week.
Chairman Jeff Smith told a well-attended meeting that SARPA would continue to press for improvements with a full hourly service, more carriages, less cancellations, more space for luggage and bikes amongst the group’s aspirations.
The treasurer/membership secretary, who was retiring from the role, gave a full account of SARPA’s sound balances, bringing much appreciation from the members.
Membership fees had been left at £8 for many years and, following discussion, it was agreed that they be raised to £10 for individuals and organisations from January 1, 2019.
Officers and committee elected for 2018/19 were: chair, Jeff Smith (Aberystwyth), vice-chair, Ivor Morris (Welshpool); treasurer/membership secretary, Bill Redfern (Tywyn); secretary, Sarah Harvey (Welshpool); webmaster, Angus Eickhoff (Machynlleth); newsletter editor, Denis Bates (Aberystwyth) to be confirmed. Elected as committee members were: Roger Goodhew (Shrewsbury), Tony Harvey (Welshpool) and Robert Knight (Machynlleth). Councillor Michael Williams represents both Powys County Council and Machynlleth Town Council on the group.
