A minute of silence was held before Welshpool Town Football Club hit the field on Friday, October 5, in honour of one of their loyalist and oldest fans.

Knowledge that Geoff Jones, who was known in the club as ‘Jowksey’, had passed away, reached the club shortly before the team’s game on Friday, October 5.

Posting on the club’s Facebook group, Dean Gill said: “It is with a very heavy heart that Welshpool Town Football Club have learnt today of the passing of Geoff (Jowkes) Jones.

“With it being very late notice to do anything regarding postponement of tonight’s match we will be having a minute’s silence before the game and in our own time the club will be planning something to pay tribute to Geoff who has been Welshpool through and through for over 50 years plus.

“RIP Geoff.”

Dozens of people from the club commented below the post to pay tribute to the loyal fan, and almost 70 people liked or reacted to the post.

Aileen Parry said: “RIP Geoff. Going to miss chatting to him. Such a lovely man, it was a pleasure to know him.”

Peter Exton said: “Used to love driving my mate Geoff to away games when I was lucky enough to play for town.

“We used to sing songs all the way there, from ‘Land of our Fathers’ to ‘My Way’.

“It was so much more fun going to the game with Geoff.

“Will miss you pal.”

Roger Eeles simply said that was an “amazing bloke”.
