Police say a man arrested yesterday on suspicion of sexual assault in Newtown has been released after being "eliminated from enquiries".

Officers will now continue making house-to-house enquiries and have issued a fresh appeal for witnesses to the assault, which is alleged to have taken place betwen 8pm an 11pm on Monday, September 24.

Dyfed-Powys Police have urged anyone who was at the canal path behind Canal Road at that time, particularly between the Halfpenny Bridge and Llanllwchaiarn stretch, to speak to them.

Detective Sergeant Andy Evans said: “The man originally arrested in connection to this incident has been eliminated from our enquiries and we are refreshing our appeal for information.

"Perhaps you were jogging or walking your dog along the path and noticed someone who looked out of place. Any information – no matter how small the detail - can help our enquiry.

"I know this is troubling to the local community and I’d like to reassure residents that officers are doing all they can to get to find the person responsible.

"House-to-house enquiries are continuing today and officers will be patrolling in the town. If you have any concerns please speak to any police officer or police community support officer (PCSO) you see."
