Hafren Dyfrdwy (formerly Severn Trent) is to begin work on the final stage of work upgrading water pipes from Commins Coch to Aberhosan, near Machynlleth, next week.

The company will begin work to upgrade the pipes in Aberhosan, having already completed work in Darowen and Tal-y-wern earlier this year.

The work forms part of a wider £4.5 million project, which will see nearly 30 miles worth of improved water pipes in Powys.

Dave Kiernan, who is leading the project for Hafren Dyfrdwy, said: “The existing pipes have been in place for some time and the last thing we want is for customers to have their water supply interrupted and not there when they need it because of leaks and bursts.

“That’s why we’re investing in brand new pipes that will keep fresh water flowing from the taps in the area for many years to come.”

Hafren Dyfrdwy partner Amey will be carrying out the work, which is expected to take five weeks to complete.

When complete nearly five miles of water pipes will have been replaced from Commins Coch to Aberhosan.

“To keep our teams and everybody safe, we’ll be using a road closure as we start work initially, and we’ve worked closely with Powys County Council to make sure this causes as little disruption as possible,” said Mr Kiernan.

A fully signposted road closure and diversion in the village will be in place for the first three weeks of work, starting between Monday and Saturday during the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm, allowing the road to be reopened and traffic moving in the evenings.

“We know this will cause some local disruption but hopefully customers will appreciate that this work will help protect the water supply for future generations,” added Mr Kiernan.
