One person is missing after firefighters tackled a massive hotel blaze in Aberystwyth overnight.

Nine adults and three children were evacuated from the Belgrave Hotel, on Marine Terrace, with five taken to hospital by ambulance.

The fire began at about 2.20am in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the cause is unknown at this stage.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire has spread to adjoining properties.

Residents from adjoining properties have been evacuated to alternative accommodation.

Public Health Wales have requested local residents to keep doors and windows shut and to turn off air conditioning units.

Ceredigion County Council have closed a number of roads in the vicinity of the property whilst the incident is ongoing.

A statement at 8.30am from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "Attending crews were met with a well developed fire and rescued nine adults and three children from the affected property.

"Five persons have been taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

"At present one person remains unaccounted for.

"The fire has spread to adjoining properties and the fire service are currently working hard to prevent further fire damage.

"Residents from adjoining properties have been evacuated to alternative accommodation.

"There are currently 12 fire appliances in attendance including 3 aerial appliances, High Volume Pumping unit and a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

"The cause of the fire is unknown however a joint investigation by MWWFRS and Dyfed Powys Police will take place in due course."
