A new bench seat in Newtown has been installed to mark 100 years since the end of First World War.

The steel bench on Bear Lane, near the Remembrance Gates to the Town Hall, was funded by Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council to remember the sacrifices of Newtown’s veterans.

Images of soldiers, crosses and poppies all feature on the bench which was produced by David Ogilvie Engineering of Kilmarnock.

The bench, commissioned by Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, will also stand outside the war memorial and garden on Remembrance Day.

Chair of the services committee, Councillor Richard White, said: “We wanted something to mark the centenary of the First World War and I think this is a great way to do this. The bench serves two purposes, a place to sit and relax and an image of remembrance.”
