Celebrations to mark the opening of a newly renovated Edwardian community hall in Builth Wells are to feature in Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s summer visit to Wales.

The Royal couple will reopen The Strand Hall on Wednesday, July 4, which was saved from ruin with more than £500,000 of funding.

The Prince and the Duchess will visit the town accompanied by The Lord Lieutenant of Powys, The Hon Dame Shân Legge-Bourke.

They will also be introduced to key people who have worked to reopen the building since it was taken over by the Town Council 10 years ago.

Welcoming the Royal couple will be the High Sheriff of Powys David Price and Builth Wells Town Councillor Simon John who have led the organising of the event.

Cllr Price said: “It’s a great privilege and very exciting event for Builth Wells. I really hope our royal guests enjoy what’s in store. We’re hoping to get a big crowd of locals to give them a warm welcome.”

Their Royal Highnesses will tour a farmers’ market showcasing a variety of local food and crafts in the hall and listen to a performance by the Young Farmers Clubs of Builth Wells and Erwood.

The Young Farmers Clubs will entertain Their Royal Highnesses with the award-winning pantomime ‘Return to Neverland’ at the hall where they frequently use for practises and performances.

During the visit a bouquet of flowers will be presented to The Duchess by nine-year-old Alys Parry, a pupil at Builth Wells Primary School, who lives at Dolygarreg, Llangynog.

Their Royal Highnesses will unveil a slate plaque designed by Builth Wells High School pupils, and they will meet some of the school’s students who have been studying the history of the building.

A guard of honour will be formed by the local Army Cadets, and the Builth Wells Male Voice Choir and Ladies’ Choir will perform outside and entertain the public on the streets when the guests arrive.

On their Summer tour of Wales, the Prince and Duchess will stop at Llandovery to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Heart of Wales railway line.

Other engagements will see Their Royal Highnesses visit Llangwm in Pembrokeshire to see the village’s attempt at baking the world’s largest Welsh cake, and attend a service to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS in Cardiff.

The week-long visit from July 2 to 6 will see the Prince and Duchess undertake 21 engagements, as part of their annual summer tour.
