FIREFIGHTERS in Welshpool are worried that drivers who are blocking their Fire Station road access are putting lives at risk.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWW) have been in touch with Powys County Council asking from more and better signage of the yellow painted box, known as a "hatch."

This sign is supposed to warn drivers to keep the road there clear so that fire appliances can get out to deal with emergencies as quickly as possible.

In recent weeks, cars queueing on Severn Road on their way into the centre of Welshpool have taken no notice of the signs, and also some people have taken to parking their cars on the hatch.

This has delayed Fire crews responding to calls

One firefighter said: "Unfortunately, there have been a number of occasions where the Fire crews have been delayed on their calls due to cars being parked / stationary outside the Fire station.

"The last one was on Friday May 25, a car had parked in front of the main doors and we literally couldn’t get the fire pump out.

"The driver's argument was there’s no signage.

The main problems are Fridays from 3pm and Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings the Ambulance Station next to the Fire Station who also have a major problem.

GMB (General and Muinicipal Workers Union) rep, Craig Scott has been discussing the issues with the Welshpool Firefighters added: "We have been told that the problem is all about funding for the correct signage.

"We need to make people aware that this is a problem and the hatch needs to be clear at all times."

A spokesman for Powys County Council, said: "The problem is not parked but cars blocking the entrance during busy periods, particularly recent Bank holidays, when queuing for the Royal Oak lights.

"The entrance to both fire and ambulance stations are covered by zig-zag keep clear marking on the road, but they are being ignored by motorists.

"We have suggested a number of options to make the fire station more obvious including improved road signs – which would require investment from them - and are waiting for a response."
